Guidelines For IBPS Specialist Officer Exam

Now start preparing for the first category which is easy in the level of difficulty and high in weight.

Quadratic equations:-

  • Use splitting the middle term method for quick calculations.
  • Use the sign convention method, it helps in determining CND cases without solving.
  • Pay special attention to square root and cube root equations.

Simplification and Approximation:-

  • Use unit digit and digit sum method to solve simplification questions. It makes calculations short and easy.
  • Try to remember squares of numbers 1 to 50, cubes of numbers 1 to 20 and reciprocals in terms of percentage and vice versa.
  • Take care of rounding off numbers in approximation questions when options are too close

  • This topic can be scoring if you practice it in a rational way. Practice all recently asked questions from this topic.
  • Make short notes on different types of patterns with examples for quick revisions.

After completing these topics move to the third category which is moderate to difficult but high in terms of weight.

Data Interpretation: –

To perform well in DI one must master these arithmetic topics:-

  • Percentage
  • Ratio
  • Average
  • Profit and Loss / Income and Expenditure
  • Simple Interest / Compound Interest

Once you are proficient in concepts of these topics, next main thing is to improve calculation speed. This can be done with following tips:-

Addition using place value of digits make a habit of two digit number additions orally.

  1. g. Find average of 5623 + 3256 + 6325 +7854 + 1239

Step 1:- Find the sum of numbers at thousands place 5000 + 3000 + 6000 + 7000 + 1000

= 1000 (5 + 3 + 6 + 7 +1) = 22000

Step 2:- Find the sum of numbers at hundreds place 600 + 200 + 300 + 800 + 200

= 100 (6 + 2 + 3 + 8 + 2) = 2100

Step 3:- Now add the last two digits of numbers (You must be capable of adding two digits without pen and paper)

= 23 + 56 + 25 + 54 + 39 = 197

Step 4:- Now add all results of step 1 to 3

22000 + 2100 + 197 = 24297

Step 5:- For average divide results of step 1 to 3 by 5 and add the results

22000/5 + 2100/50 + 197/5

Use of percentage method for multiplying numbers, for example, we are required to calculate 45*56 it can be done in following way

= (56 % of 45) * 100

= (50 % of 45 + 6 * 1 % of 45) * 100

= (22.5 + 2.7) * 100

= 2520

Ratio analysis using percentage: – In this method, we represent numerator in terms of percentage values (100%, 50%, 10% and 1%) of the denominator.

Unitary method: – In this method, we convert real values in units and after applying all operations convert that unit into real value. It saves from the complex calculation and saves time.

For example, total expenditure of a man is 8000 and various sub-categories are given in which he has spent this amount.

  • Food = 20 %
  • Cloth = 30 %
  • Entertainment = 20 %
  • Travel = 20%
  • Others = 10%

And we are required to find the difference in the expenditure of Cloth and others, first of all, we will convert the percentage into units

100 % = 100 units = 8000

1 unit = 80

Now, difference in cloth and others = 30 – 10 = 20 units, answer = 20 * 80 = 1600

Visualization: – If the question is to compare data of two series in a bar graph, line chart where the difference between various values is large and the options are not close enough. In such questions by merely visualizing the data, one can answer the question quickly.

After your completing this topic move to the miscellaneous (arithmetic) topics. These topics are covered in the second and fourth category. Try to prepare for the second category first and then move to the fourth category. For these topics follow the following tips:-

  • Make short and precise notes of formulas and important results.
  • Practice questions from recently conducted exams.
  • Try to bookmark new concepts and practice questions on these concepts from online resources (good quality is a must).
  • Use options instead of solving complex equations
  • Do not spend more than required time in a particular question/topic as time resource is limited.
